Among the towering red cliffs and ancient ruins of Petra sits the corpse of Mrs. Boynton. A tiny puncture mark, the only sign of the fatal injection that killed her. Hercule Poirot recalls a remark he overheard back in Jerusalem: "You do see, don't you, that she's got to be killed?" Mrs. Boynton was, indeed, the most detestable woman he had ever met. With only 24 hours to solve the case, can Poirot find the killer amongst so many suspects?
Published in 1938, Appointment with Death was adapted by Christie for the stage, though she omitted to use Poirot in the adaptation. The play opened at the Piccadilly Theatre in London in 1945 to rave reviews. It was later adapted by Hollywood and EMI Pictures released it in 1988 with the great Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot. Christie’s own travels helped inform the novel as did an archaeological dig she was involved in at Petra. In 2008 David Suchet appeared as Poirot in the ITV production
I will get the book soon. I have it ready waiting for me in the library but don´t know if I can get it today, but in any case soon we can start this plot and be excited about the whole mystery.
ReplyDeleteI'll wait for u, although I did already read the first page, and yes, looks like a good one,lol
ReplyDeleteI got the book but will start it tomorrow :D
ReplyDeleteOkay you know we have talked about that nothing are coincidences and that it seems we are way over our heads with all of these symbols and signs, well hey I just handpicked this book because the title seemed interesting and SURPRISE the book is about Jerusalem. Again something with religion and now the 3rd book I read about that place. I mean Da Vinci Code about the Holy Grail and then The lost symbol about the secrets of religion and faith in life. And these 2 books I just decided to read and this I handpicked. Something is going on.
ReplyDeleteI have reached the 6th chapter so will continue from there on. This family Boynton seems strange and will be interesting to see what happens with them and Poirot.
I noticed the location, LOL That's what I've been telling you, Carre, the right tyoe of info, book, movie or whatever just "happens" to come our way at the right time. This most definitely is Not a coincidence. I never got a chance to read it yesterday, but I will read today.
ReplyDeleteYeah it´s for sure it´s not a coincidence!!! we will see what we figure out this time:P
ReplyDeleteI've read until chapter 6 tonight. Thought I'd read until the place u last left off. I think I'm going to like this book. A remark by Dr. Gerard that I found interesting and so true ---" no race, no country and no individual could be described as free"
ReplyDeleteThat old lady seems like quite a despicable woman. Although I know a brother and a sister talked about killing her in the first chapter, I'm wondering if the old lady doesn't OFF herself so she can further cause trouble for all of them , LOL Of course, she'll make it seem like murder. The kids all seem to chicken to carry it off. At least that's my impression for now.
That exact quote I found interesting too and I was thinking about it several minutes after reading it. Like what does he mean by that and why mention something like that?
ReplyDeleteIt will be exciting to see what they can do with this old woman and surely something will happen that will lead Mr Poirot to come in the picture. And of course it will be a mystery :P
It's interesting that for years people have thought such things as that quote. Agatha Christie wrote this book years ago, and so it seems that even back then, the problems we have today, also existed. And people thought the same way. I hope it doesn't mean that things will never change...
ReplyDeleteAs for the story, well, that old lady will die, but interested in finding out how and by whom. Everyone has a reason to kill her,lol She seems evil, like she really has something evil inside her,, and therefore I would think she'd know they wanted her dead.
I really think Mrs Boynton is evil and yes something will surely happen. The question is by who?
ReplyDeleteAgatha mentions several times that we are not free, so maybe she knew something too about the world. As you said it´s not that it will never change but let´s say as long as we have rulers we wont be free, because if we were, the world would collapse. As I have understood it we humans need to be controlled, some less some more. It´s the balance of life.
I think that is the illusion they want us to believe, that in order to have order, we need to be controlled. I don't agree, Carre. We need to live in a "pack", sort of like animals, coz each one has a different strength and can bring something different to the "community". It's fear that makes us believe that we need to be controlled. The fear "they" say we must have. And it's that fear that has let them control us . Yes, probably Agatha was quite aware of the workings of the world. Maybe not to the degree we are, but we never know...
ReplyDeleteThis family is a perfect example of that: the kids are so fearful of being on their own (coz no money, skills etc), that they stay with that evil woman. She's brainwashed them. "She" is all the leaders and "elites" who do the same to us,brainwash us into thinking we cannot survive without their input.
ReplyDeleteI don´t agree either but this is how the world has always worked and I think always will, unless something big happens. Let´s hope for the best.
ReplyDeleteI´m already in the murder itself and how they are getting the proof of what happened and by whom. I love the way Poirot questions people and suspects all. I dont know if even Sarah can be involved in it somehow. I´m in the part 2 and the 3rd chapter.
ReplyDeleteI'm also in part 2, but still in the first chapter. Let's see if my prediction that she actually killed herself but made it seem like someone else did, comes true, LOL
ReplyDeleteI read a little more of the book last night. Chapter 12 of part 2. I love the "psychology" parts in the book. I didn't realize Agatha Christie knew so much about human psychology, lol
ReplyDeleteAnyway, the book is great. So far, I really can't tell who could have killed the woman, unless it was she herself, OR one of the servants in that place they were staying, LOL I mean, everyone wanted her dead, but with Agatha's books , it's never so obvious, lol
What about u? Predictions?
Yeah it´s getting exciting indeed. I´m gonna read tomorrow in the treatment and might even finish the book then. I don´t know who to suspect really since I have only read the first chapters in part 2 but at the moment I suspect the family or even sarah?
ReplyDeleteI thought about Sarah too, but well, murder is a bit extreme for someone to commit , especially since she only knows Raymond a few days. And wow, she and Raymond have spoken a few times, and already they're in love?? LOL Fast...
ReplyDeleteOf the family, I go more with Lennox or the young girl, Jinny, simply coz it doesn't seem like it would be them, lol
Today I read until the sixth chapter so looking at all the interviews Poirot was doing. It´s always hard to say who did what but I don´t think it´s Ray and Carol that are the main suspects unless there is some specific clue in it all.
ReplyDeleteWell, we'll see. I'm hoping to read at work tonight, if there is a quiet moment, although based on some comments in facebook from some co-workers, last night was crazy busy, and tonight might be the same.
ReplyDeleteYeah I have gotten to the 13th chapter already so not much left, soon the crime or not crime will be solved. And I agree with on the fact that Sarah and Ray fell in love so oddely fast, LOL!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm chapter 13 too. Didn't have a chance to read much last night. I'm going to finish it this weekend though. And then I'll start Jermaine's book.
ReplyDeleteI finished the book last night at work, so now I know who did it, lol
ReplyDeleteI´m close to finishing it too. Had time to read today since I have been in bed all day. Not many pages left so soon I can share this information with you, heh!!!!
ReplyDeleteWOW I finished the book too. Was a good one and as always the story turned totally. Quite cute the ending of the story, that Poirot man is so sharp ain´t he! BTW just watched Water for Elephants with my husband and loved it. I warmly recommend it to you :)
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the book too, and typical Agatha Christie, the killer is never who thought it was, lol Smart, lol
ReplyDeleteI'll keep in mind Water for Elephants. The book was good too.
I did say the "servant", LOL Didn't know that Lady was the servant, lol
ReplyDeleteyeah you had a hinch!!!:)
